step 2: dimensional inspection

The indexed assemblies are then subjected to dimensional inspection, again using the video-probe cmm. First, significant machined features of the individual components are measured [in this case the liquid tip I.D., O.D. and tip protrusion and the air cap I.D. which forms the outer edge of the annulus].

As can be seen, the individual components appear to be machined within reasonably close tolerances:
 

 

As assemblies however, composite features known to be critical for spray performance [e.g.-annular gap, orifice-to-annulus concentricity and gas orifice bolt center to annulus O.D.] are found to be highly variable:
